Generating Qualifiers

After students articulate their reasons and provide relevant and sufficient evidence with elaboration or interpretation, they acknowledge what others might say who oppose the writer’s position. Then they address these contrary assertions. Qualifiers answer these types of questions: What are the exceptions to your claim? What are the opposing views and their weaknesses? Figure 5.10 (page 83) reflects an argument structure in which the writer presents qualifiers in each body paragraph. Writers can also dedicate a separate body paragraph to one or more oppositional viewpoints and countering them. To help students craft this part of their arguments, teachers can model and share sentence frames, like those in figure 5.
